Ballast Study on Floating Production Facility

Challenge

An E&P company in the Gulf of Guinea needed to install a reciprocating compressor on an existing Floating Production Facility. The company requested for our technical support. Amongst the jobs we did on the project was the ballast study to ensure the new installation does not adversely affect the stability, structural integrity and overall safety of the facility.

Our approach
We carried out the facility layout mapping (weight distribution, centre of gravity, etc.) and the compressor train specifications, (weight, dimensions, compressor train. operational characteristics, etc). We then set out the revised weight distribution, ballast plan, and load analysis. Using FEA to model the stress and strain distribution on the facility’s hull and structural members, we were able to gauge the ballast system’s capacity to compensate for the added weight. We also assessed the hydrostatic stability including the metacentric height and righting moments.
We did not fail to confirm that the dynamic positioning system can handle the new weight distribution. Same for the mooring system which we ensured retained sufficient line tension, and that station-keeping capabilities aren’t compromised.
We ensured adherence to stability criteria and classification requirements, including the rules of classification societies such as Lloyd’s Register, IMO, ABS, DNV, and GL. Additionally, we addressed aspects like risk and safety, noise, and vibration to facilitate the vessel’s certification.
Results
We prepared a revised Stability Booklet which would enable the client to achieve successful re-certification of the vessel.
